ABSTRACT: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication in diabetic microangiopathy and is one of the main causes of end stage renal disease (ESRD). Its etiology and pathogenesis are very complicated, and they have not been fully elucidated. The ideal animal model study can help to explore the etiology and pathogenesis of DN, to diagnose early onset, to find clinically relevant therapeutic targets and to explore new treatment methods, evaluation of interventions and other aspects of irreplaceable role. In this paper, we present a review of the commonly used DN rodent models at home and abroad to explore the characteristics and application of different DN rodent models.
