ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the ratio of Th17 cells and CD4+CD25-Foxp3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells in the peripheral blood of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: The peripheral whole blood was obtained from patients with BPH(n=33) and healthy controls (n=19). The percentage of Th17 and Treg cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: The percentage of Th17 and Treg cells to CD4+T lymphocyte in patient with BPH was 1.58±0.71 and 1.76±0.83, respectively. The ratio of Th17 to Treg cells in patients with BPH was 0.89±0.42. The percentage of Th17 and Treg cells to CD4+T lymphocyte in the healthy controls were 0.75±0.46 and 1.83±0.75, respectively. The ratio of Th17 to Treg cells in the healthy controls was 0.41±0.32. The percentage of Th17 cells and ratio of Th17 to Treg cells were significantly increased in patients with BPH compared with healthy controls. Conclusion: The increased percentage of Th17 cells made the imbalance of Th17 to Treg cells in patients with BPH. The imbalance might be involved in the pathogenesis of BPH.
