Objective: To investigate the effect of microwave ablation on the biomechanics of canine's bone specimens, both
structurally intact and reconstructed with bone cement in a defect model. Methods: 12 pairs (24 in all) of femurs were obtained from 12
adult dogs, which were randomly divided into two groups, structurally intact or reconstructed. Then, one femur of each pair was randomly
selected as the control and the other one for microwave treatment. In this way, four groups were formed: structurally intact control and
microwave group, reconstructed control and microwave group. Then, each femur was made into two kinds of bone specimens, 3 cm and
6 cm in length, respectively. Those specimens in the two microwave groups were devitalized by microwave ablation, and those in the two
reconstructed groups, after making a defect on them, were reconstructed with bone cement. Last, the specimens 3 cm in length were used
for compression test and the specimens 6 cm in length for three-point bending test. The maximum compression load and deflection and
the maximum bending load and flexibility of the bone specimens were measured, then the data were statistically analyzed. Results: There
was no significant statistical difference in maximum compression load, deflection, bending load and flexibility between the structurally
intact control and microwave group, neither was there significant statistical difference between the reconstructed control and microwave
group. Conclusions: Microwave ablation does not damage the biomechanical strength of the structurally intact bone specimens, neither
does it worsen the mechanical strength of the reconstructed bone specimen by bone cement. |
