ABSTRACT: Adenosine and nitric oxide (NO) are very active endogenous substances with a variety of biological activities. In re- cent years, the interaction between adenosine and NO in the peripheral tissues and central nervous system (CNS) has been extensively concerned. Adenosine in the CNS is widespread, which can be used as the integration of the central excitatory and inhibitory neurotrans- mitter regulator. NO has extensive biological significance in the CNS, act as a second messenger, neurotransmitter and an effector molecule which involved in a variety of physiological functions. The metabolic derivatives of NO have certain central nervous system toxicity. Emerging studies have shown that adenosine and NO may have some interactions in the CNS. Here, we reviewed the interac- tions between adenosine and NO in CNS and its relationship with the therapy of epilepsy, in order toprovide novel ideas for CNS-related diseases therapy. |
