Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a progressive microvascular complication arising from diabetes and is the leading cause
of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Current clinical therapies used in individuals with DN do not prevent the inevitable progression to
ESRD. Therefore, better understanding of the pathogenesis of DN and new targets of therapy are urgently required. Ample evidence
indicated that disturbances in mitochondrial dysfunction were central to the pathogenesis of DN.A number of processes sustain healthy
mitochondria in the cell: mitochondrial quality control, mitochondrial DNA and so on. This review took a journey through the past and
summarise the debate about the occurrence of mitochondrial dysfunction and its possible role in the progression of DN. |
