ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the differences in adherence and biofilm formation between Staphylococcus epidermidis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates on different biomaterial implant surfaces and provide a theoretical reference for the selection of clin- ical orthopedic materials. Methods: Bacteria were isolated and identified by conventional methods. The ability of adherence was detected by colony counting method and the biofilm formation ability was measured by 96-well crystal violet staining method. Results: S. epider- midis and M. tuberculosis isolates had the strongest adherence and biofilm formation ability on bone material. S. epidermidis isolates had a higher adherence and biofilm formation on the three materials than that of M. tuberculosis. In addition, the adherence and biofilm for- mation of S. epidermidis and M. tuberculosis on the rough surface of titanium alloy and stainless steel were significantly higher than those on the smooth surface (P<0.05). Conclusion: S. epidermidis and M. tuberculosis isolates had the different adherence and biofilm forma- tion on different biomaterial implants. The adherence and biofilm formation of different bacterial species on different implant surfaces provide the basis for the selection of clinical orthopedic biomaterials. |
